How I use a Brain Dump in my Bullet Journal

Hey friends,

Welcome back to #PlanningSunday! Today, I’m delving into —the "Braindump" section in my bullet journal. This space is my mental playground, my creative hub, and my secret weapon for a stress-free week.

Why the "Braindump" Section, you ask?

Have you noticed yourself... thinking of a new home project? A book title to research? A film to review? A subscription to sign up for? Even jotting down random notes like picking up dobi or hastily scribbling on a tissue at the coffee shop? All those fleeting thoughts scattered everywhere, from notebooks in your phone to random WhatsApp messages to your husband. Imagine having them all in your "Braindump" section—never forgotten, always at your fingertips.

Life gets chaotic, and our minds buzz with ideas, tasks, and random thoughts. The "Braindump" section is my sanctuary to unload everything onto paper. It's therapeutic and frees up mental space.

Where to Write It?

In my bullet journal, of course! Every month, I create a specific section on a page simply for braindump. To make it more intentional, I divide the section into areas of life that I usually care/focus on. For instance, Creative - Work - Life.

When to Use It:

Feel overwhelmed? Have a burst of inspiration? Need to clear your mind before bed? That's my cue. Anytime my brain feels like a bustling city, I’ll turn to my "Braindump" section. This is where I will write it.

How to Use It:

No rules here! Scribble, doodle, list—it's my space. My bullet journal, so I make it mine. Pour out tasks, dreams, worries. Don’t worry about neatness; it's about expression. The messier, the better.

Why Is It Different Than a To-Do List?

Because it's just thoughts. Thoughts that linger around my mind are not an immediate to-do list. Usually they are not, and always just distractions. Having this section will train my brain to focus on my actual to-do list and not randomly do everything. That's how we usually end up doing something that was not on the focus list, whether at work or at home. In the end, nothing gets done, or it's done half-baked.

What to Look at in the Section Later?

Every week or even every day, as I dive into planning, I will revisit the "Braindump" section. Highlight priorities, transfer tasks to specific days, or move potential projects into Notion. In the longer term, I’ll watch my chaos turn into a structured plan.

At the end of the month, take a breather before starting to plan a crazy schedule. Reflect on my "Braindump" entries. Spot patterns, identify recurring thoughts. This insight is gold for shaping my goals in the upcoming month. Maybe it’s worth to pay attention to if it’s keep popping out!

Other Quick Tips for Writing in a Braindump Section:

  • Let it flow: Dump without filtering.

  • Bullet point: Just write short notes or keywords.

  • Mindful review: Identify what truly matters.

  • Color code: Categorize for easy sorting by highlighting it.

  • Set intentions: Use insights for intentional goal-setting to help you better plan the new week or month.

In a Nutshell:

My "Braindump" section is my mental safety net. It captures the wild storms of my mind, things that I thought should be on a to-do list, project ideas, quick reminder of something I wanted to do. All that eventually is bringing clarity to chaos.

If you’re new to this, embrace the mess, find patterns, and you’ll see how you transform your thoughts into an actionable plan.

Ready to conquer the week with a clear mind? Grab that pen, open your "Braindump" section, and write it down. Happy planning!
