A phone call

If there’s one thing I hate about my mobile phone, it's answering calls. Texting has always been my go-to; it's my comfort zone where I can reply at my own pace. But transitioning into a new role as a newbie Business Analyst (BA) in a software environment has pushed me to break free from this habit and embrace a new form of communication.

Learning everything from scratch has been quite the journey, and one of the biggest challenges I've faced is stepping up my communication game. Let me tell you why mastering quick calls has become so important to me in the last 4 months:

  1. Building Genuine Connections: While Slack messages are convenient, nothing beats the personal touch of a quick call. It's these conversations that help me forge real connections with my team members.

  2. Engagement and Efficiency: Zoom chats might pop up unexpectedly, but they're where the magic happens. Real-time interaction not only keeps everyone engaged but also speeds up decision-making in our fast-paced environment.

  3. Cutting Through the Noise: Emails and Slack threads can sometimes feel like a maze. Quick calls cut through the clutter and get straight to the point, ensuring everyone's on the same page without endless back-and-forths.

  4. Showing Flexibility and Growth: Embracing quick calls isn't just about communication; it's about showing my willingness to adapt and learn. Each call is an opportunity to showcase my eagerness to grow in my role.

I'll never forget the time a team member invited me for a quick chat to solve a problem. Ten minutes later, not only had we resolved the issue, but I'd also built a stronger connection with them.

In summary, as I navigate my journey as a newbie BA, I've come to realize that face-to-face conversations, whether on Zoom or in person, are invaluable. They not only enhance workflow and save time but also foster collaboration across my new environment.

So here's to stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the power of quick calls – one conversation at a time.

Do I like to make a phone call, now? Nope. Still not. But I gotta-hadda-shoulda 🥹
