A tad saltier
Was it ‘eek’ or was it ‘ahh’ reaction that he had? Or was it just Hideji’s imagination? Hideji is one of the first character in the first chapter of “The Kamogawa Food Detectives”. It’s the current book that I am reading at the moment. I’m not here to write booknotes (not till I finish reading it!) but rather reflecting on the story I’ve read. Only in it’s first chapter, it warms my heart on a Saturday morning at dawn. I love this book already…
It’s amazing how meals can bring back memories from the past into someone’s life. It makes people smile with eyes closed at the first taste, mouth still full of food like a hamster choping their peanuts, whilst hands already scooping another bite from the plate. It’s also wonderful to also noticing how the cook to put up so much effort to travel thus far only to look for the right ingredients, and preparing them carefully for their loved ones. It’s a usual scene that all of us have had experience.
Just like the corn fritters and peanut sauce dip that my mom used to make for tea; thinking of how much effort she put in to set the table and gather us, sisters all around to spent the time together. It’s a perfect way to cosy up during the rain! I’ve tried to remake and even tasted from others, nothing tastes the same as the one your mom made.
But here in this book, it’s such reflective sight of how a tiny change of the taste can also help someone to leave their past and focus on their future. A tad saltier seems not a too bad at all.
