Day 205/ 366

“Mumbling sounds in the distance”

A rhythmic hum of students chattering fills the air on Monday morning, their voices rising as the teachers’ voices climb higher, trying to get them in order.

Half awake, just like every other day, I prepare Jojie’s food first. It’s his breakfast time, and he is impatiently waiting for me to fill up his plate and water bowl. No matter how much fun I had the night before staying up late, I can never escape but to wake up earlty to feed my senior cat. They keep you on a routine for sure.

“Good morning, Jojie! Here you go, boy. Come on now,” I say as I bring his fresh food to his eating corner and pick up his water bowl, refilling it with cold water, just the way he loves it. “Now, here’s your fresh water. Bon appétit!”

The school bell rings, its clear tone cutting through the morning air, signaling the start of a new week of learning. Teachers call out roll on a mic; I can hear their voices, firm but kind, as students respond in unison.

I don’t understand the words; they’re in Tamil. In this town, Tamil is primarily spoken by the Indian community, while the rest of us usually speak Chinese, Malay and English.

Through the window, I can hear the sounds of the street blending in—the bicycle bell, the distant honking of cars and motorbikes. The sun is shaded by thick clouds today, but it still beams its heat. There’s no wind, and the leaves are still, as if they’re too exhausted to start the day. Birds tirelessly chirp and flit past the window. Even though the sun hides behind the thick clouds, her heat wraps around everything, and the air feels heavy with humidity increasing by the minute.
