Engaging with people who don’t read

…”Right there, there’s my absolute problem”. As a perpetual learner, I always try to reach out to many people as possible to share the beauty of reading, I ended up oversharing things that people don’t read won’t care about. I don’t want to just talk about how to pose like a reader in a bookshop just because we #doitforthegram, no, I really want to discuss books!

Just few nights ago, one of the guests who I met at our Christmas barbecue was loosely asking me if I am a reader whilst we were all talking about getting into adventuring in Dungeons & Dragons gameplay for Halloween next year and I was in the zone (I can be awkwardly excited about things like fantasy world building, there’s that!). That’s when we started to engage and ended up cornering ourselves like chippy chipmunks in my reading nook half the night talking about books! It was a cute meet.

The week before, a reflective chat with Andreea at our bookish Christmas date, made us realised, if we are going to meet bookish community, we have to make it right, we have to choose to write to people who wants to engage with us about books. People who don’t read, “They don’t have to understand this”. This things we are obssess about, the right people who choose to sign up on the same precious journey will connect to us.

It’s a similar concept on trying to coach people who resist change, educate people to live healthily and to campaign for people who endanger the climates. There’s a potential, people who voluntarily literate themselves will connect us to other like-minded new friends instead!

Whether or not you like to read, I’ll leave you with this quote :

“If you want to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books” - Roald Dahl
